Novosibirsk is the largest center of academic science in the Asian part of Russia. It possesses the high scientific potential of four Academies of Sciences: Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB of RAS), Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Branch of the Academy of Architectural Sciences. Over 50 academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, more than 1,200 Doctors of Science and close to 3,500 candidates of science live and work in the city.
Most of the institutes of the Novosibirsk Scientific Center (NSC) of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences are situated on the shore of the Ob Sea in Academgorodok. NSC is one of the centers of international scientific exchanges and training of scientists from various countries. It is a unique manifestation of inter-science cooperation, whose developments are being introduced in production and utilized. NSC comprises close to 50 R&D and engineering and design institutes that carry out theoretical and experimental research in physics, technical, natural and economic sciences.
A high level and multidisciplinary character of basic research allow the research institutes to be successful as competitors for obtaining grants from national and foreign foundations. In addition, a large stock of completed developments in the field of advanced techniques and technology ensures making contracts with leading foreign and international companies and developing technoparks.
International research centers, which function as open institutes or laboratories, have been set up on the basis of the SB RAS institutes holding world standards in their branches of knowledge. The Siberian Branch of the RAS strives to broaden international co-operation at different levels, from government and international associations to organizations of foreign countries. Such intentions have been recorded in the agreements and memorandums signed with the European Community, International Association INTAS, Chinese Academy of Sciences and single provinces of China, with universities and higher schools of Germany, USA, Japan, with academies of sciences of Republic of Korea, Byelorussia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and others.
Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (SB of RAMS) was established in 1970 in order to solve medical and biological problems of the population living in severe climates of Siberia, the Far East and Extreme North areas.
Novosibirsk Scientific Center of SB of RAMS comprises:
Scientific Center of Clinical and Experimental Medicine
R&D Institute of Physiology
R&D Institute of Clinical and Experimental Lymphology
R&D Institute of Molecular Biology and Biophysics
R&D Institute of Biochemistry
R&D Institute of Therapeutics
R&D Institute of Clinical Immunology
Novosibirsk State Medical Academy, R&D Institute of Tuberculosis, R&D Institute of Hygiene, R&D Institute of Blood Circulation Pathologies named after Academician E. Meshalkin, R&D Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics, Vector State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology represent the Russian Ministry of Health in Novosibirsk.
Vector State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology is one of the largest scientific and production centers of Russia. It comprises six R&D institutes.
The Center's research is aimed at development of new medical and veterinarian preparations. Their development is based on up-to-date technologies, including genetic engineering, created at the Center.
Research institutes of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SB of RAAS) carry out fundamental and applied interdisciplinary research to enhance efficiency of agricultural techniques for Siberian climate. The research aims at boosting production of grain, milk, meat, vegetables, fruit and berries with the use of advanced production, storage and processing technologies.
Scientists of SB of RAAS have achieved considerable results in cereal and fodder crop selection, cattle breeding, fodder production, veterinary, engineering support and agricultural economy.
